Dear Parents of Young Adults with Special Needs:
My name is Mimi Rogers. Some of you may know my daughter Dylan through the Peoria Community Center Adaptive Recreation Program or the Deer Valley Unified Special Education Program. My daughter Dylan has Down Syndrome and is 16. My husband and I have recently been contemplating Dylan’s future, and one of the issues we have be thinking about is whether or not she might be able to live away from us with friends with assistance when she graduates from high school 4 or 5 years from now. This prompted us to look into starting such a program for other young adults with special needs.
The first step in this project is to find out if other parents are thinking along similar lines as we are. Which brings me to our request that you take a few moments to respond to the survey below. Your response will help us do three things:
1 We will be able to determine if there is a need for such a program in our area of the valley.
2 It will inform as to the specific preferences of parents in our area as to how exactly we should model our program.
3 It will provide us with data to include in grant applications to help fund the program, should we discover there is a need.
We hope this website will help to inform you on the vision we have for our
program. I do want to stress that we are not proposing a group home program,
but rather a program through which young adults who already may know each
other from high school or post high school programs and may be interested
in trying to live together in a home or apartment of their own with support
and supervision may do so.
Thank you so much for helping us with this stage of our project. Please call
if you have any other questions or advice for us.
Sincerely,
