Supportive Residences
Moving away from our parents’ home and establishing ourselves in a home of our own is a natural stepping stone in the life of a mature adult. This is no different for an individual with Developmental Disability, but the barriers to achieving this goal are much greater. From the ability to feel secure and safe in a home and manage it successfully to being able to financially afford the expense this step toward maximum independence brings can seem insurmountable. At One Step Beyond, we see this goal as a high priority. Our first step is to provide the life skills training needed to manage a home of one’s own through our adult day programs. Step two is to provide opportunities for individuals to connect with compatible housemates through our training and recreational programs. The third step is to help families find the right house or apartment to fit the needs of their young adult, help them determine a budget, and fill in the financial gaps by securing governmental funding support. Finally, our staff provides ongoing support to insure that the residents feel safe and have all the help they need to be successful and happy in their home. One Step Beyond has established 3 supportive residences over the past 5 years and hopes to help other families take this important step for their young adults when the time seems right for them.
