Recreation Programs
Seeing the need for addressing the health, stamina, and obesity issues of individuals with Developmental Disability, and realizing that physical stamina and appearance are essential to successful employment and community inclusion, we sought funding and collaborative partnerships to establish a physical fitness program that incorporates exercise, physical training, nutrition education, and diet planning. We also participate in Special Olympic activities including soccer, swim, basketball, baseball, bocce ball, floor hockey, flag football, and bowling. We have established a partnership with the Peoria Community Theater Organization, Theater Works, to provide weekly drama classes and performance opportunities. Our Art classes taught by artist in residence Maggie Laughlin emphasize drawing, painting, pottery, and crafts. Our Dance Program, sponsored by the Molly Lawson Foundation and Arizona Sports and Tourism Authority, offers weekly Dance classes and performance opportunities to our program participants and families in adjacent communities. Most importantly, our recreational programs extend beyond the Monday through Friday 8:00 to 3:00 model. Realizing that young adults with disability deserve a social life comparable to their peers with our disability, we have established our Friday Fun Nights and Social Saturdays Program to provide evening and weekend social opportunities so that our program participants and the young adults of families in our adjacent communities can get out to the movies, ball parks, and other cultural and community events.
